How the cubic feet calculator works
Every item on a move takes up a known, average amount of space measured in cubic feet. Enter how many of each piece of furniture and how many boxes you're moving, and the calculator adds them up into a total — the number movers use to size a truck, a crew and a quote.
How much does my move weigh?
A common rule of thumb is about 7 pounds per cubic foot of household goods, so the calculator multiplies your total cubic feet by seven for a planning-grade weight estimate. Long-distance movers often price by weight, so this helps you sanity-check a quote.
What truck size do I need?
- Under ~250 cu ft — a cargo van or 10-ft truck (a small studio).
- ~250–450 cu ft — a 10–15 ft truck (studio to 1 bedroom).
- ~450–800 cu ft — a 16–20 ft truck (1–2 bedrooms).
- ~800–1,200 cu ft — a 22–26 ft truck (2–3 bedrooms).
- Over ~1,200 cu ft — a 26-ft truck or larger (3+ bedrooms).
